Lower Ringarooma Ramsar Project |
|
The Lower Ringarooma River Floodplain Ramsar site is one of five internationally-recognised Ramsar wetlands located in the northern region, all of which are coastal in some form.
The Ringarooma Ramsar site is listed under three of the Ramsar criteria: being a representative, rare or unique example of a near-natural wetland type in the biogeographic region; supporting threatened ecological communities; and supporting populations of species important for regional biodiversity. The wetland and its surrounds also perform a range of ecosystem benefits and services and encompass at least 12 identified ecological communities, spanning the coastal, estuary and freshwater river, floodplain and wetland zones.
The Ringarooma Ramsar wetland covers a cross-tenure area of over 3,300 hectares, over half of which is managed as part of the Rushy Lagoon property. NRM North has undertaken a range of integrated activities aimed at increasing understanding of the wetland’s character and processes to develop well-informed management actions. Following this, on-ground works have been delivered to achieve improved protection of the wetland’s valuable natural assets.
