Lake Trevallyn Algal Bloom Monitoring Program |
|
RIVERS AND WATER FOR LIFE: The cyanobacterium Anabaena circinalis was discovered in Lake Trevallyn in bloom proportions in January 2007.
This bloom was the catalyst for the establishment of the Lake Trevallyn Algal Bloom Monitoring Program and Working Group. The working group comprises members of NRM North, Hydro Tasmania, West Tamar Council, Meander Valley Council, and Esk Water (now Ben Lomond Water). Its aim is to monitor the occurrence of Algal Blooms in Lake Trevallyn during the peak summer recreational period and to try to understand the key drivers influencing the outbreaks and propose various management strategies to adopt.
In November 2008, the working group hosted a public information session about the monitoring program, health effects of algal blooms and the likelihood of algal blooms recurring in the lake. The monitoring program started earlier this summer compared with last summer, to ensure that any early bloom outbreaks were detected. Monitoring commenced in November 2008 through to June 2009. Only one non-toxic algal bloom outbreak was recorded in this timeframe in April 2009. Appropriate action was taken including erecting appropriate signage and notifying key user groups of the lake. |
