Control of Gambusia Holbrooki |
|
The introduced pest fish Gambusia Holbrooki is known as the ‘fish destroyer’. It poses a significant threat to native aquatic species including the nationally threatened Green and Gold Frog.
Gambusia Holbrooki is only found in the Tamar Estuary and work is underway to control or eradicate the pest. The methods being used include direct control actions, research into trap development and raising awareness to promote community involvement and minimise the risk of Gambusia spreading beyond the Tamar Valley. Control actions vary from temporary drying of drainage lines and poisoning of dams, to trapping and hand netting in open/interconnected waterways. Maintaining or building volunteer participation in the trapping program is a core focus of the project. Community groups and local schools have been engaged and volunteers from several groups are involved in the ongoing trapping program. |
