SeaMap Habitat Mapping

The SeaMap Habitat Mapping project was completed in 2008 by the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute and co-funded by NRM North through the Australian Government. The objective of this project was to generate detailed marine habitat and bythymetric maps at 1:25000 scale of shallow coastal waters for selected areas around the state.

Marine habitat maps provide the baseline for a wide range of coastal research and planning issues such as environmental impact modelling and assessment, habitat monitoring, marine farm planning, localised coastal developments and pollution and oil spill response. This project has improved our understanding of the marine environment and developed a sound information base for the management of marine resources around the state.

Marine habitat maps were completed from Bicheno to Georges River and Swan Island to the Tamar estuary, Macquarie Habour, Orielton Lagoon, the Ringarooma Inlet, and Moulting Lagoon (estuarine area).
